Ex-smokers are supposed to be the most fierce anti-smokers. I think it’s also fair to say that reformed couch-potatoes like myself are some of the most evangelical when it comes to extolling the benefits of running. And so when one of my friends who hasn’t run in 15 years suggested in the pub on Saturday night that we go for a run the next day, I was ready to lace up my trainers there and then.

Seeing people who don’t run get out there trying it out or pushing beyond what they thought they could do is very exciting for me. It means I have new people to talk running with and more people to go for a run with. That and it’s good to see people you care about getting fitter and living longer I suppose.

So Sunday lunchtime we headed to the park with the aim of running one lap of 1.5miles. After clocking up one lap of 9 minute miling we carried on and finished two laps – 3 miles in 27 minutes. This was a massive achievement for my friend who, as we walked to the shop for a recovery drink, was talking about getting some proper running shoes.

The running population has just gone up one person. That’s four people that my enthusiasm has gradually worn down and encouraged to start running over the past few years. I recommend that you share the love with those you love.
