Finding a Running Bra You Love

Not all runners are the same. Before we even get into our different sizes, shapes and fitness levels, we all have different preferences; some like pavement pounding, other prefer trails, some like intervals, other like to take their runs easy, and some like long runs while others are fans of short and fast.

So, when it comes to kit and especially running bras, it’s great to get recommendations from other runners but, essentially, you need to find out what works for you – your size, your shape and your preferences. Because, like runners, not all bras are created equal.

I’m very much a fan of bras that hold me in and stop anything moving as much as possible. I want a bra that’s adjustable (because my breasts change size throughout the month) and I don’t want them squished into one big monoboob.  These are my non-negotiables.

However, I know that other runners find the bras that I like too restrictive. They prefer a crop-top style running bra that you pull on and are comfortable with a little movement.

How running bras affect your running

The important thing for all runners, though, is that you feel comfortable in your running bra. There is data to show how a poorly fitting sports bra can actually shorten your stride and essentially make running harder work. I didn’t need to read the study to know this to be true. From years of working with women runners, I see first-hand how feeling confident changes a woman’s running posture and in turn changes her stride.

When you feel confident, you run taller. Your shoulders relax and your arms are free to sit by your sides and drive backwards – these are all key to good, efficient running form.

My favourite running bra

My favourite running bra that I recommended to a LOT of people was the Brooks Juno. I loved it and, because it had front fastening straps, it was great for training while I was breastfeeding. I was gutted when the bra was discontinued and I wore my three Juno bras long after I should have.

Brooks have put a lot of work into reinventing their running bras over the past few years and designed a range that they hope has something for every runner. Thankfully, for me, the Dare Racerback Run Bra 2.0 is a very similar style and fit to the Juno bra I love and miss.
