90 minutes, no excuses

"I didn't have time." "I had too much on." "Something came up." We're all familiar with these excuses and I'm sure we've reached for more than one of them when justifying not running. But what if someone were to make the day longer. Well, someone has just bloody well gone and done that. My day is [...]

Hash runs

Never heard of hash running? Well it’s sort of like Fight Club but with running instead of fighting and with some downing of pints thrown into the mix. Last night Mr Niceguy (more Ed Norton than Brad Pitt for purposes of this metaphor) dragged me along to my first ever hash run.We ran around the [...]

Running hobo style

Most of the time I smell like a hobo when I'm running. For the past two weeks though, I've actually been of 'no fixed abode' which has had an impact on my running. Don't worry, I'm not sleeping rough - some kind-hearted friends have opened up their homes to me and my smelly running shoes. [...]

Now I remember

I don't have a child, so I've never given birth but this week I feel like I know a little more about being a mother. As I was describing how my marathon training is going to a colleague the other day, she said: "Ah, that must be what it's like when you have a baby." [...]

Saying no

My desk. 5pm.Colleague: Fancy a quick pint?Me: Ummmmm.....This morning I got up at 6 and trekked across London for an appointment. I didn't get to work until 10.30 so felt too bad to do anything more than eat a bagel at my desk. The afternoon was busy but my training plan stared up at me [...]

1,350 mile journey and a 3-mile race to the loo

Last Tuesday I had a 3-mile race just two miles from my front door. How convienient! Except I was in Greece still. There's a huge business around doing races in foreign counties and you could spend thousands of pounds doing the Great Wall of China marathon, the Everest marathon and such likes. But I think I [...]

The beginnings of a marathon

Greece. Home of Ouzo, Feta, fried cheese and running. I'm happy to report that all but one of those things featured in my recent 9 day trip to Kefalonia - and it was the Ouzo that I passed on. Mythos was my drink of choice. The marathon, as we all know, began in Greece. So [...]

Super cycling

When plans were announced years ago for a cycle superhighway through London, first I did an excited little yelp and then I imagined an express lane for bikes through the skies of the capital. It seemed so far in the future that these plans would actually materialise that I wondered whether we'd all be pedalling hoverbikes [...]

Doughnut try this at home

After 24 hours of nil by mouth I munched my way through a fair few Krispy Kremes. This was more than sufficient fueling for pathetic 2 miles on the bike. Repeat after me everyone: "this is not the way that sub-4 marathons are built". Well tomorrow is, as they say, another day on the schedule.
