This morning I read an interview with British ultra-marathon runner Jez Bragg. Jez is the first Englishman to win the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc so he knows a thing or two about running really, really long distances.

As I’ve said before, I’m aiming to run an ultra in the next couple of years – probably not the 166km that make up the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc – but something 30 milesĀ or so. So I was interested to read Jez’s response to the question of how he made the leap from running marathons to running ultras.

Jez said: “I’m confident that anyone who can run a marathon can run further.” Now I’ve done a marathon, so in Jez’s eyes there’s nothing to say I can’t do an ultra. Jez even has ‘confidence’ in me.

I have a similar belief about running to Jez and have long told anyone who will listen to me that if you can run 3 miles, I believe you can run a marathon. Obviously not the same week, or maybe not even the same year. But if you can bare with it and get beyond those first few painful miles following a sensible training plan, I think you can do it.
