Have you run a marathon? Yes? Well score one to you, score zero to Dr Frasier Crane. Frasier, like many people, wanted to run a marathon but he never got round to it.
Remember the hilarity that resulted from the hospital mixing him up with another patient who then died? The newspapers and TV stations ran obituaries for Dr Crane and everyone was so relieved when they realised what had happened. Well, appart from the family and friends of the guy that actually did die. But he was only an extra so screw that guy.
Inspired by his fake death, Frasier writes a sort of bucket list. He intends to run the Seattle marathon, but he doesn’t. Maybe if Frasier’s friends and family had been a bit more supportive of his running ambitions he might actually have got round to it before he died – well, before the show ended. Here’s how it went:
Daphne: What happened to your clothes? Did you spill something on yourself?
Frasier: No, I’m going jogging later.
Daphne:  No need to be sarcastic. Just give me the clothes and I’ll do another load.
Frasier: No, I’m serious Daphne I plan to go running just after I finish writing my obituary.
If you haven’t run a marathon, but you’d like to – don’t be a Frasier, start training now. Go on. Have unsupportive friends and family? Go prove them wrong. Also, don’t wear a tracksuit like the one Frasier is sporting. Seriously, this may have been in the days before wicking technology but the man would have sweated to death in that thing. If you live near me you’d also get mistaken for a looter.
God, I miss Frasier. If I was 20 years older, lived in Seattle and was a fictional character in a long-running TV sitcom, I’d have been all over that man.
The episode was ‘The late Dr Crane’ if you’re wondering. Episode 7 series 8, and yes I should get out more. I hope you’re enjoying this spinoff series of posts struggling to fuse running with American sitcoms. Who knows how long it will last. Probably not as long as ‘Frasier’ but possibly longer than ‘Back to you’.
